Las Vegas 2010– The Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream

So this has been a blog that has excited me for some time! This is the account of some of the best 5 days of my life. In the words of the great Hunter S Thompson, from the great Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it was my “Savage journey into the heart of the American Dream.” Viva Las Vegas!
So to get there it was tad stressful. I had to make 2 separate trips to the airport as the airline had lost my bag. After, in true Vegas style, winning my bus fare into town on the slot machines that greet you as stumble off the plane into the hot desert sun, I was stunned by the famous Vegas lights and the manic chaos that surrounds it.
We stayed in Treasure Island, the one with the pirate ships outside, after getting a fantastic deal through some contacts we had met from camp. Our group was frightening! We contained people from all over the place. Australia, USA, and the wonderful England were all proudly represented.
Now from here on in, I did what most people who come to Vegas for. I abused my body in decadent surroundings, living a life that usually isn’t afforded to me not just at home but anywhere else in the world.
We got on it straight away, taking in the bars and casino floor. We ended up wandering into a rodeo themed bar with a mechanical bull. After a few more beverages I found myself riding said bull in a competition. The first round went OK, the second round went incredibly badly, we shall just leave it at that.
The next day we emerged, heads sore, and sloped down to the pool. Started drinking again, along with everyone else who was at the pool. At this point I ended up a dance routine I had learnt while at camp in front of all the faceless strangers at the pool, but sack it we got free drinks, who’s complaining? I certainly wasn’t.
There were many more nights and messiness, and even a helicopter ride capturing the beautiful Vegas trip. There are 3 defining moments that are the highlights of my Vegas experience.
One was our final night out for my best mate, Rooksie’s birthday, which can be best described on an entry from my other blog, Irrelevant Idiot.
Secondly, the Grand Canyon was an overwhelming and as awe-inspiring as many make out. It’s not just a hole in the ground it is a true piece of beautiful and interesting landscape and well worth the 6 hour trip out there.
However, the best night of our entire trip was when we spent the night at the Ghost bar on the rooftop of the Palm’s hotel. From a contact one our mates had we managed to gain entry and free drinks into the bar and also entry into any other clubs in the Palm’s complex, including the Playboy club.
That night we lived like kings, hitting drinks and feeling way above our station. Rooksie and I looked at each other in one moment and we couldn’t believe our luck that two lads from Teesside had ended up in that bar on Labour day weekend! We also saw Mini Me from Austin Powers in the Playboy club to top the night off.
So if you have a vice, go to Vegas, live the heart of the American Dream, it will give you stories that you will never forget and stories you will never remember. I couldn’t recommend it more.
